Eastern Screech Owl
Miami, the Eastern Screech Owl, is VINS’ tiniest education bird, but one of the most beloved. At a wildlife rehabilitation center in Florida, Miami was treated for head trauma, and unfortunately, he can no longer see out of his right eye and has permanent neurological damage. He was transferred to VINS in the summer of 2017 to live out his days as a VINS ambassador.
Although Eastern Screech Owls are native to Vermont, Miami is a member of a subspecies that prefers the warmer temperatures of the southeast. When his is not out on glove, Miami lives in an aviary set up to make him feel comfortable, even on the coldest Vermont winter day.
Miami has a feather pattern that looks just like tree-bark, a clever camouflage technique, and he often sits so still that if an educator holds him up in front of a tree, you may not notice him, except for the occasional ‘wink’ of his good eye.
